You'll be surprised to find out the dishes are called differently from everywhere else in Malaysia! Here's our top three hawker food pick you must try in Penang!
#1 Asam Laksa
Asam Laksa is a spicy noodle with sour, fish and tamarind-based soup served with thick rice noodles.. Originated from Penang, Penang Asam Laksa listed at number 26th on World's 50 most delicious foods compiled by CNN Go in 2011.
This dish is simply referred as laksa in Penang. If you're anywhere else in Malaysia, this laksa will be referred as Asam Laksa instead. There's other versions of laksa such curry laksa with coconut base. Curry laksa is simply referred as 'Curry Mee' in Penang.
#2 Rice Noodle Soup
Referred as Mee Thai Bak in Penang, this popular rice noodle is served with a different shape (fat and short) with a clear pork broth and minced pork. This dish is similar to kuey teow teng and the only difference is the type of rice noodles used. Try this version of rice noodle when you're in Penang as it is less common to find elsewhere in Malaysia.
#3 Hokkien Mee (Prawn Mee)
Also known as har mee (prawn mee), this hawker classic uses prawn shells and heads to develop its signature, full-flavoured broth. It is served with both yellow egg noodles with rice vermicelli and topped with hard boiled eggs and shredded pork.
This dish is referred as Hokkien Mee in Penang. If you're anywhere else in Malaysia, this dish will be referred as Har Mee (Prawn Mee).
